Year 1 visits Belsize Square Synagogue

Year 1 have been thinking about places that are special so we went to visit a special place for Jewish people, called a synagogue. This is where people can meet to pray together, to reflect on their lives together and to educate their children in the Jewish faith. Before we entered, the boys, and girls too if they wanted, put on a cap called a kippah. This is to show respect for God. Some of the Muslim boys had taken their own prayer caps.

Inside we were shown lots of interesting articles including some beautiful Torah scrolls which are all hand written and some are very old, from the nineteenth century. We found out about Shabbat, which starts on Friday evening, when Jewish families have a special meal with candles and blessings for the sweetness of life. Many thanks to all the parents who came with us on this very interesting trip and thank you to Henny, our guide at Belsize Square Synagogue.
