Adding using counting on

atis mathsYear 3 have been perfecting their adding methods. The written method we are using is counting on, on a number line.

First, order the sum with the biggest number first.

Second, partition the smaller number in to HTU. For example 135 = 100+30+5.

Then, draw an open number line starting at the bigger number.

Now count on the jumps starting with those worth the most. You will need to count on accurately in hundreds, tens and units.

Have a look at these examples. Then make up some sums and get cracking. You can check your answers by using a calculator.ben
